Dear Total Quality Reading Editor,
I am a 70-year-old prose writer and playwright from the Seattle area. Please consider the attached 6000-word short story for publication. "Portrait in Black" recounts the psychological deterioration of a recently jilted freelance writer, and his further downward spiral after receiving a portrait in charcoal from a caricaturist at an art fair.
Thank you for this opportunity. I must say you have the most unusual writer's guidelines I have ever read - I could have used Donald Barthelme's help deciphering some of it - but I do appreciate being able to submit via email attachment, as Submittafail stopped working for me entirely in March. In any case, I'll look forward to your response.
Respectfully, johnVC

Sounds like a post moderny homage to Wilde's Portrait of Dorian Gray. And, as well, because you are one of the few and the proud who've actually read the guidelines...you're in.

Dear Theodore,
Thanks so much for considering "Portrait in Black." I did indeed have Picture of Dorian Grey in mind when I wrote the story. But I'm not a fantasy writer, so there is nothing supernatural in the tale. It just concerns the phychic toll that comes with arrogance and cruelty - presuming the antagonist has a conscience...
I will look forward to your response.
Yours, johnVC
