I've attached a revised version.
I think I've addressed your concerns and comments.
I've added a short paragraph about the white feather. I've tried it as a prologue and epilogue and think it works better at the end. However, feel free to move it to the beginning if you think it works better.
The bigger issue of why Thomas would assist the German after what happened with Ryan was dealt with by two changes.
In the second case, I have Thomas say, "But if the Germans came across one of ours, you want them to help." This is in line with the idea of reciprocity which I used as the explanation for obeying the Law of Land Warfare.
I went back to my source material (Ambulancing on the French Front by Edward R. Coyle, 1918) and rewrote the German's action based on his account of German behavior in the chapter "Kamerad."
There was one small change to the scene of Ryan's death. In the original, the German soldier is described as having a grenade. The German Army of the period used two types of grenades - the potato masher (a grenade mounted on a stick) and the kugelgrenade (spherical grenade), which used the wire ignition described. The incident itself is also from the Coyle book.
Please let me know if you have any questions or additional changes.

Also, just want to let you know we'll publish it soon. I like it very much, the verisimilitude is out of sight, and since you took to my idea about the rewrite I know that it will be done well. Just give me a few days and I'll get it all together. Where do you want the check mailed?

Glad that you are enthused. I try to be as accurate as possible when writing (hence specifying the grenade) and lean on my collection of first-person accounts to add realism.
Please send the check to

Good day. I'll be sending the money soon. I am working on getting it on the site. My CMS or whatever it's called, the screen where White Feather will be displayed is giving me fits, and it's slow going. Just wanted to let you know I'm working on it.

Thanks for the update.
As someone that has had to build webpages for online teaching for at least ten years, I can sympathize with your problems.

OK. The spacing between paragraphs isn't always uniform but otherwise it's a great story! The host site's html is automated or something and generates repetitive code. It's a nightmare and as soon as I clean up one area it generates more next time I sign on. I do apologize. And I really like what you've done with the ending, having Miller "fall on the grenade" so to speak. Matches his selfless demeanor throughout. So it should be up by the weekend if not sooner. The check's in the mail (likely story, right?).

I'm glad that you write[sic] the rewrite. Good luck with the coding. I've had similar problems and had to recode whole pages.

Just to let you know that I received payment this weekend. Any idea when it will be published?

Awesome to hear. The story is powerful. I apologize for the spacing hodge podge. The autogenerated xhtml has a mind of its own. I did try and clean it up to some degree but thought it would be best to publish it instead of agonizing over a database I may not have been able to tame in a thousand years.
