The opening words of this cap are: "The neighborhood was a cheap well drink". Which I didn't really understand. Indeed, there were a few times where the undeniably charismatic writing left me behind a little and I had to read twice.
Never mind, I resigned myself to this elided style, and settled in.
TQR strives to find smart capital. I strive to be a smart reader. But it's hard sometimes, y'know? Sometimes I feel like I'm missing something - like the capital is good, but it went over my head. And that's my fault, not the cap's. Should I trust my editorial judgment, or am I inadequate to the task? Maybe I should let this one through, even though...
Hey... HEY! Stop gaslighting me, motherfucker. How I feel, how I vote, is totally valid, and you have no right to make me feel small about it.
Yeah, so, this cap needs a big fat trigger warning. It contains an almost cartoonish level of abuse and domestic violence. At one point the main character hits hit dad over the head with a cooking pot at least six times. And then shoots him with a rifle nine times. The cap seems to revel in the abuse and violence more than the inner lives of the characters. It was, at times, uncomfortable to read - which can sometimes be a good sign, if it's for the right reasons, but bordered here on gratuitous.
One unfortunate consequence of under-egging the characters is that the tension of the waitress stuck alone in the diner with a self-confessed killer didn't ride as high as it could.
The ending throws in a supernatural twist that worked in a story of such extremes, but wasn't enough to rescue it for me.
No.
