Gray bleakness fills the Bull’s days as rainy season smacks him with a vengeance. It’s no surprise. It happens every year. Yet, with the return of each summer, the Bullmeister laments the cloudy afternoons that plague the dog days. Normally, it’s clear and sunny all morning, then the skies open up late afternoon. Evening is a symphony of thunderstorms.
None of that bothers the Bull too much. It’s the season, the rhythm of the days. But lately, it’s been gray and dark all day. Clouds filling the horizon with no end in sight.
The Bull hates this shit. If he wanted this colorless existence, he would have stayed north and not moved to the technicolor climate of Florida.
Bah!
Speaking of gray bleakness, we have the cap “The Domovoi”.
This is a turn-of-the-century, period tale filled with cold, empty dreams. Every character is devoid of joy and searching for something. The protagonist of the cap, Yevgeniya, is a young woman, fresh of the boat from Russia. She makes friends, the best that one can, with the house spirit aka the Domovoi. The lady of the house also strikes up a friendship with her, renaming her Jeanie, which she accepts without apprehension. That is, until the day a favor is asked of Yevgeniya, one that Yevgeniya feels obligated to grant.
The description and pros of this are beautiful. There is a buildup. It swells and swirls like an old fairy tale.
At first, I read this and found myself disliking the ending, then upon subsequent reads, I realized it worked.
This is not my chosen genre of literature, but it’s good. So yeah, I have to give it a yes vote. Rocks may feel differently. Okay, I know this is two in a row. Have I gone soft?
